The iconic image of Christ Pantocrator ("Christ, Ruler of All") was one of the first images of Christ developed in the Early Christian Church and remains a central icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church. One of the oldest iconography of the Orthodox. Christ is seated on a wood throne with cushions. He makes a sign of blessing with his right hand and holds a closed Gospel Book in his other. To the left and to the right the Mother of God and St John the Forerunner are shown. They have their hands raised and turn in prayer towards Christ. Saint John executed with wings which symbolize John’s status as a divine messenger (in Greek “Evangelos”, from where the word “Angel” is derived). The Byzantine iconography of the Deesis was one of the most popular in Cretan icon painting. Very rare old byzantine icon in perfect condition. The icon executed in birght red and blue colours.
